Instagram’s dark mode flips the whole app, DMs included, from bright white to a near-black background with light text. It is easier on your eyes at night, saves battery on OLED screens, and honestly just looks better. It is also the way most people want their Instagram DM screenshots to look.

What Instagram DM dark mode actually is

Dark mode is a color theme that runs across the whole app. When it is on, your DMs change in a few specific ways:

• The chat background goes black (#000000 on most phones).
• Messages you receive sit in dark grey bubbles instead of light grey.
• Messages you send keep the pink-to-purple gradient.
• Text, icons and the status bar turn white so everything stays readable.

By default Instagram follows your phone’s appearance setting, so your DMs go dark whenever the device does.

Turn on dark mode on iPhone

Instagram for iOS follows your system setting:

1. Open Settings, then Display and Brightness.
2. Tap Dark.
3. Open Instagram. Your DMs are now dark.

Want it dark only at night? Set Automatic on that same screen and pick a schedule.

Turn on dark mode on Android

1. Open Settings, then Display.
2. Turn on Dark theme.

How to make a fake Instagram DM in dark mode
