A fake Instagram DM in dark mode is a mock screenshot of a chat, styled to match Instagram’s dark theme. Creators use them for memes, thumbnails, skits, ads and app mockups. Here is how to build one that actually looks real, for free and with no watermark.
What you can recreate
A convincing fake DM is more than two grey bubbles. Real chats include:
- Sent and received messages, your gradient bubbles against their dark grey ones.
- Photos and GIFs, including the short loading state before an image appears.
- Voice notes with a play button, a waveform and a duration.
- Replies that quote an earlier message.
- Story replies that show “Replied to their story” with a thumbnail.
- Reactions, a small ❤️ or 😂 tucked under a bubble.
- Seen and typing indicators.

Step by step
1. Start in dark mode
Open the generator. It loads in Instagram’s dark theme, so you are already halfway there. If you want the light version, one tap switches it.
2. Build the header
- Username is the handle at the top of the chat.
- Display name is the person’s full name.
- Avatar can be any image you upload. It stays on your device.
- Verified badge toggles the blue tick on or off.
- Active status can read “Active now”, “Active 5m ago” or your own text.
3. Choose iPhone or Android
Pick the frame, then set the status-bar time, battery percentage and carrier. Getting the time right is the single biggest thing that makes a screenshot believable.
4. Write the conversation
Add messages one at a time and mark each as You or Them. For every message you can pick a type:
- Text with emoji and line breaks.
- Image, uploaded or shown in its loading state.
- Voice note with a set duration.
- Story reply with reply text and a thumbnail.
- GIF as an animated-style frame.
You can reorder or delete messages, and add a reaction or a quoted reply to any of them.
5. Add the finishing touches
Turn on the typing dots to hint that the other person is mid-reply, or a Seen receipt under your last message. These two toggles do the most to make a still image feel like a live chat.
6. Download
Save a crisp PNG or JPG, or copy the image straight to your clipboard. No watermark, no sign-up.
